The word karate is derived from two Japanese characters which stand for chi (Chinese), and ryu (Spanish). This style is believed to have been developed from observing how Buddhist monks fight in defense in old temples. It combines high kicks with the use of the waist, elbows, and knees to deliver powerful strikes. It is the most popular style of karate today.
The main differences between the three main styles of karate are the teaching methods and positions. They are; traditional, Western, and self-defense oriented. Many people believe that there are similarities in teaching methods and that all martial arts eventually teach those aspects. Karate-do is different though in that many moves are based solely on strategy and discipline.
